MIAMI, Fla. — The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for stealing almost $5 million worth of gold on Interstate 95 in Wilson earlier this month.
On March 1, a tractor trailer carrying gold and silver left Miami for Boston. The truck pulled over after the smell of gas made the passenger sick.
The guard who wasn’t driving was approached by two men who identified themselves as police.
Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. said the men tied both of the guards’ hands.
The robbers tried to steal the truck but couldn’t get it started, even though warrants stated the truck was in good working condition. The robbers took the gold but left behind $5 million in silver, according to warrants.
The warrants said, “There is suspicion at this time that this could be an inside job due to the circumstances of the robbery.”
The FBI’s reward is in addition to the $50,000 reward already being offered by the shipping company TransValue, Inc.
If anyone can help identify the suspects in the sketch composites, they are asked to call the FBI at (754) 703-2000 or Crimestoppers.
