HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Spring Hill man is charged after he said he accidentally fired a gun, which hit his girlfriend, killing her, according to deputies.

On Wednesday, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on St. Ives Boulevard in the gated, Pristine Place community regarding a shooting.

Inside the home, officials found a woman, dead, with a gunshot wound.

The suspect, Roland Maurice Akins, 61, was immediately arrested.

Akins told investigators he got into an argument with the victim, who he said was his live-in girlfriend, and that he tried to get her to leave the home. He claimed she was holding a gun during the argument and when he got ahold of the firearm, he accidentally fired it and struck her.

Deputies arrested Akins on a charge of homicide and took him to the Hernando County Detention Facility where he’s being held on no bond.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
