MIAMI (AP) – Authorities searching for a stolen scooter say they ended up finding a 2-year-old child alone in a Miami motel room surrounded by drugs.

Multiple media outlets report that Miami police discovered the boy Tuesday morning.

Police say officers were dispatched to the motel in search of a scooter that had been stolen in Coral Gables.

Miami police Officer Willy Perez says he was conducting a search of the area when he found the toddler, sleeping inside the room with crack cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia within arm’s reach.

The child is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

Miami police Commander Armando Aguilar says the child’s mother, Maidolys Oduardo Paneque, was arrested on charges of child neglect and narcotics.

The search continues for the suspect who stole the scooter.
