TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— A nearly 95-year-old retired college instructor is stuck in the middle of red tape involving improper withdrawals from her pension and health insurance benefits.
Jean Jones and her daughter called Better Call Behnken and said they were out of options and fed up.
Jones worked as a reading instructor at St. Petersburg College for decades and says the college took too much money out of her pension check in January 2023: $924.59 instead of $290.96. She never received a refund.
Now $277.39 has been deducted, when she no longer even has insurance through the college.
Marta Jones says she tried to take care of this on her own but had no luck.
Consumer Investigator Shannon Behnken reached out to the college. A spokeswoman followed up and said the college apologizes for the inconvenience. She sent this statement:
“Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We apologize for any inconvenience to Ms. Jones. We value our employees and retirees at St. Petersburg College and always want to provide them with a good experience. Unfortunately, this occurred during a period of staff transition. However, we have rectified the situation and paperwork has already been completed to get a check into the mail to Ms. Jones this week. We will continue to assess and make adjustments to our processes as necessary to ensure this does not occur again. We wish Ms. Jones the best in her retirement and thank her for her years of service.“
