HAINES CITY, Fla. (WFLA) – A puppy trapped in a storm drain and in bad shape is now safe after some Haines City Firefighters jumped into action. It was a different kind of rescue for the firefighters.

The fire department received a call on Tuesday from a man who was walking his dog. He said he thought he heard an animal trapped in a storm drain at the intersection of Melbourne Avenue and North 24th Street in Haines City,

When firefighters arrived, they found a small puppy in the drain. “We have no idea how he got in there,” said one of the firefighters.

Firefighters removed the cover to the drain and were able to pull the puppy out to safety.

Firefighter Alex Diemer cleaned and fed the puppy and took him to a veterinarian. The puppy was checked for an identification chip and was treated for worms.

So far, no one has come forward to claim the puppy, who is believed to be around 2 tp 4 weeks old. As of now Diemer plans to keep the puppy, unless an owner claims him.

This isn’t the first time the Haines City Fire Department has rescued a dog. Ember, a pit bull, was found muzzled and tied to a tree in 2012. She now lives at the station.
