TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump calling for Russia to find the 30,000 emails deleted from Hillary Clinton’s email server, News Channel 8 went to the experts at Florida’s Center for Cybersecurity at USF to see if the emails could actually be found.
“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. Let’s see if that happens,” said Donald Trump during a press conference on Wednesday.
Experts warn when talking of “Russia” that could mean two different things: state sponsored hackers, or Russian hackers. Sri Sridharan is with Florida’s Center for Cybersecurity at USF. Sridharan said it can be complicated and sometimes impossible to figure out who is behind hacks, like the one at the DNC.
But the question is, “What would motive hackers?” They’re mostly motivated by financial gain.
Sridharan said that businesses with the United States are attacked daily, by not just Russian hackers but hackers from many different countries. Sridharan said it would be hard to do, but hackers could likely find Clinton’s deleted emails.
Is state-sponsored hacking in Russia unheard of? No. But the FBI continues to investigate who might be behind the hack of DNC emails.
