Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold medal in the 4×100 final medley relay. He finishes his Olympic career with 28 medals total.
Phelps said earlier Saturday on a Facebook live broadcast that the race is the last of his storied career. Historically, the U.S. men have won gold in this event every time they’ve entered, dating back to the event’s debut in 1960.

Murphy, making his Olympic debut in the Rio Games, swept the 100m and 200m backstroke gold medals. Miller, also making his first Olympic appearance in 2016, earned a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke. Adrian picked up two individual bronze medals in the 50m and 100m freestyles in Rio and won gold alongside Phelps, Ryan Held and Caeleb Dressel in the 4x100m freestyle relay earlier in the week.

Phelps showed fans around his room in the Athletes’ Village and showed his room’s “strong” medal count. David Plummer, Ryan Lochte, Phelps, Jimmy Feigen, Chase Kalisz and Conor Dwyer combined for seven golds, two silvers, and two bronzes. Their caps were taped to the wall, though there was no sight of the famous “ripped cap.”
“Go for 30 medals in Tokyo? I don’t think so boys and girls; this is over. This is it,” Phelps said in response to a comment. Phelps also called out another fan for saying Phelps and Lochte are old, instead preferring to say that both of them are at a “mature age.”
