TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Tampa Bay area Wells Fargo locations may be closing. The bank’s fake account scandal may directly impact local customers.
Wells Fargo has 6,000 branches, and 600 of them are in Florida. Twenty of those locations are in Hillsborough County. Wells Fargo hasn’t announced any large-scale closures, but experts told CNN Money it could happen.
“This is my main branch and if they close this, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” 19-year-old Maya Pettigrew said.
Pettigrew is a student at the University of Tampa. She banks at the Wells Fargo branch on South Hyde Park Avenue. “I’ll probably switch banks,” Pettigrew said about the potential closures.
She just opened her first credit card with the bank. “Everything’s been pretty great,” she said.
However, the $2 million account scandal has left her uneasy. “I think it’s really unethical,” Pettigrew said.
Others customers have similar feelings. “Yeah, it’s bad news and it’s bad for the customers, too,” said Shannon Smith, who also banks at the branch on South Hyde Park Avenue.
Smith said she’s not worried about a potential closure because there are a lot of banks.
“Their business ethic is not good,” customer Don Han said.
A Wells Fargo corporate spokesperson would not provide details, other than to say locations are sometimes opened, while others are closed.
