MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A 12-year-old girl was taken to a juvenile facility after she scratched her teacher and kicked a deputy in Manatee County Monday afternoon.
It happened at Lee Middle School in Bradenton. According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report, Molly Westbrook, a teacher, was trying to discipline Shadavia Williams, one of her students because the girl had her phone out during school. Williams put the phone on the ground and the teacher picked it up to take it away from her.
The girl grabbed Westbrook’s arms and dug her fingernails into her hand while trying to take her phone back, injuring the teacher.
When the girl calmed down, she was taken to an office where a Manatee deputy was conducting the investigation of this incident. Deputy Howard Claar put his hand on the girl’s arm and told her to put her hands behind her back because she was under arrest. She pulled her arm away, kicking the deputy in both legs and ankles and stomping on his feet.
The deputy was taken to a hospital, treated for a sprained ankle and released.
The girl was transported to a juvenile booking facility.
