TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 59-year-old cyclist was killed during a “serious traffic crash” involving a Hillsborough County public transit bus Friday afternoon.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the crash happened just before 4:15 p.m. near the intersection of North Nebraska Avenue and East Fern Street.

HART bus No. 1406 was traveling southbound at the time of the accident when the cyclist, later identified as a 59-year-old man, was riding on the street.

A news release from the public transit authority said the cyclist made contact with the bus and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic in both the north and southbound directions of North Nebraska Avenue were closed at East Hanna Avenue and East Lambright Avenue for several hours while authorities investigated.

The roadway was reopened around 8:30 p.m.

“Our deepest condolences are with the victim and their family,” said Adelee Le Grand, CEO of HART. “The well-being and safety of those in and around our transit vehicles is of utmost importance, so this is truly a tragic accident. We are fully cooperating with authorities to investigate this matter.”

The accident remains under investigation.
