ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — All northbound lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge were blocked after a car burst into flames early Wednesday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a “fully engulfed” vehicle fire on the bridge at around 2:20 a.m.

FHP said all northbound lanes were blocked at mile marker 35, with just the outside emergency lane open for passing cars.

A DOT camera positioned south of the bridge’s ‘hump’ showed a black car with flames pouring out of the windows in the northbound lanes. An explosion sent blue sparks flying up into the air and into the water below the bridge.

There’s no word yet on what caused the car to catch fire or if anyone was hurt in the blaze.
