TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A toll booth worker was seriously injured Monday after an empty cement tanker crashed into a SunPass toll plaza in Collier County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the empty cement truck was being transported by a semi-truck when the 35-year-old driver fell asleep behind the wheel. Moments before the crash, the truck driver woke up and applied heavy brakes before his trailer jackknifed and collided with the toll plaza along the eastbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 100.

A 67-year-old woman stationed inside the “extensively damaged” toll booth was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries. Two people waiting in a passenger vehicle next to the damaged toll booth were also transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Several toll lanes were closed while crews investigate and clear the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities are expected to release additional information later Monday.
