TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was shot and killed by a police officer in St. Petersburg after he allegedly threatened his mother and officers with a gun, authorities said.

The Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Taskforce is investigating the incident, which occurred outside a home in the 4500 block of 20th Avenue North shortly after 3 a.m. Monday morning.

Officers responded to the home after getting a 911 call from a woman who said she was hiding in the bathroom with a small child after her son, Cody Kiley, threatened her with a gun.

Police got to the home a few minutes later and saw Kiley in the backyard, armed with a gun.

Hale said Officer Stephen York released K9 Loki to engage Kiley, but he wouldn’t drop his gun. York pulled the K9 off Kiley, but he continued to threaten them with the firearm, according to Hale.

York fired multiple shots at Kiley, striking him. The 31-year-old died at the scene.

Hale said York will be placed on routine administrative leave.

“At this point, it’s an ongoing investigation, there is a lot to be determined,” Hale said.
