TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Authorities said a man died after he was stomped to death in a parking lot outside a 7-Eleven in Tampa on Friday.

Around 1:20 a.m., police were called to the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at 4943 E. Busch Boulevard about someone stomping a man while he was unconscious.

Upon arrival, officers found a man in his early 70s suffering from severe upper body trauma., according to a release.

The responding officers tried to perform CPR on the victim before he was rushed to a local hospital by Tampa Fire Rescue, police said.

Police said using surveillance video and witness interviews, they identified the suspect as 39-year-old Taron Criner.

Officers found Criner at around 7:08 a.m., wearing clothing that matched what he was seen wearing in the surveillance video. Police said he had “apparent blood spatter” on his clothes.

Criner was charged with murder and taken to the Orient Road Jail.
