POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A DirecTV, Amazon Scam has hit the bay area. The scam promises to cut your monthly bill in half, if you prepay with Amazon cards.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after Becca Hanna reported that she had been scammed.

Hanna became a DirecTV customer in January. She said that shortly after she signed up for DirecTV service, the company began calling her “excessively” to check how her service was.

This past week she received several calls from an 800 number. When she called back, she heard an automated messaged for DirecTV. When the number called again, she thought it was someone once again calling to check in.

“I finally answered it one night,” Hanna told 8 On Your Side.

T person on the other line offered her a deal. The caller knew her name, address, account number, and other details.

The man offered her a special promotion that he said was sponsored by Amazon.

“He said, your bill will get cut in half and we will give you a $100 visa gift card. All I had to do is pay six months of my bill up front with an Amazon gift card,” Hanna said. “I would get all of the HBO, Cinemax, all the movie channels, and all the sports channels, for half the price.”

Hanna said she googled the number, and saw postings that the number was related to DirecTV.

“They gave me a promotion code and their billing department number, and told me when I get the gift card call this number. I hang up and research the number, and it’s a DirecTV number,” Hanna said.

After the transaction she decided to call DirecTV using a different phone number, that she found on their website.

She found out she had been scammed.

“When I realized I got scammed I was furious. I was really upset,” Hanna said.

Hanna said Amazon has offered to refund her $300 since she is an Amazon Prime member.

Detectives advise if you get a call like this hang up.
