TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – There were major delays on the Howard Frankland Bridge Friday morning after a tire flew off a pickup truck, causing the parts of the vehicle to hit a car and an SUV, authorities said.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a Ford pickup truck was traveling in the northbound lanes of I-275 near Kennedy Blvd when the truck experienced a mechanical failure. The left rear axle broke and a tire, rim and part of the axle came loose and hit the center concrete divider.
The loose wheel assembly vaulted into the southbound lanes and hit the windshield of a Ford SUV before hitting the right side of a car. Then it burst into flames, according to the report.
The driver and a passenger in another vehicle were hospitalized with minor injuries.
“No action was taken due to the mechanical failure of the axle,” the report states.
