News Channel 8 has learned of a community campaign to stop speeding in Temple Terrace. The neighbors are sick of seeing drivers speed past their homes so they are now collaborating on Facebook.
“I have four grandchildren who I love more than anything else in the world, and if one of them got hurt because of something like this, someone speeding, it would be terrible. It would be devastating,” said Gil Schisler.
Schisler has called Temple Terrace home for over 43 years.
“My wife and I raised both of our kids here. They both live here,” said Schisler. “It is what I have always dreamed of as far as being in a small town without getting lost in the woodwork.”
He would never leave the neighborhood so he wants to fix it. We witnessed plenty of drivers abiding by the 25 mph speed limit.
“Excuse me,” said Schisler, “I have someone coming, 24 mph.”
We also caught some drivers speeding.
“40 mph!” exclaimed Schisler.
Schisler monitors a Facebook page, Temple Terrace Traffic Issues.
The page was created by another neighbor with the same concerns. It encourages residents to provide descriptions of speeding cars. Schisler gave us an example.
“If there was a white SUV, wow, that could have been my neighbor,” explained Schisler. “I would say something if I saw that type of thing so the possibility is there so hopefully that will spur peer pressure and help the police.”
The Temple Terrace Police Department is aware of the issue.
It added the neighborhood to a traffic enforcement program and it also requested additional speed limit signs.
The department is hoping to do a study at the intersection of East 113th Avenue and Theresa Arbor Drive to see if two more stop signs can be put there.
“If you have to speed, go someplace else,” Schisler said.
“Get on the interstate and drive awhile, just do not come to Temple Terrace. We do not need it. Our kids do not need it. Our residents do not need it.”
